The Rauck Family History Page

"We celebrate the love of family in our heritage, our traditions, and in the hopes and dreams we pass on to our children." (anonym.)

Welcome to the Rauck Family History Page. This page is a cummulative documentation of the reseach completed to date on our family background, with an overall review of the separate lines that we know must somehow be related but have yet to connect the lineage. Rauck's from every line have spent countless hours of research. Pages upon pages of history exist. Much has been found, yet much is left to be found. We hope you will find this information valuable to your own appetite for your past, as well as provide gratifying family ties to your futures. I dedicate this page to Rauck's everywhere, may you realize the importance of your existence to future generations. I wish to send a special dedication to Dr. Gert Rauck from Hamburg Germany for this most valuable information regarding our family heritage, the late Josef Römgens, who prepared all the material which Gert is keeping, to Dr. Michael Rauck, whose relentless hours of research help unite Rauck's around the globe, and Ursel Karl, who's countless hours has provided this family the ability to trace our family beyond the 1600's and tie our direct blood lines to hers.

The Name    rauckrook.bmp (360054 bytes)
On the 9th of September, 1791, Casparus Rauck died after having served for 56 and ¼ years as Mayor of Fulda. During this time he was a medical doctor. The coat of arms was given to him by the ruling sovereign in honor of his merits. The motto in Latin says: "Si Deus pro nobis quis contra nos?", which translated into English means: "If God is with us, who can be against us."

"according to my American Dictionary: 'a gregarious bird, about the size and color of the crow, which is noted for intelligent and mischievious behavior'. The bird's name in the English language is 'Rook'. Some hundred years ago in the eastern part of Austria where people spoke the German language, this bird was named 'Rauck'. "

"This is the Rauck noted for intelligence and in Germany a rare species".

Our Lineage Our family's lineage has been traced back to Mathis Rauck, born in the mid 1600's . Mathis came from the town of Bruck an der Mur in the Austrian state of Styria. It´s the Austrian state where Governor Schwartzenegger of California comes from. The town of Bruck is 670 km away from Fulda. The next generations were (Wilhelm) in Rasdorf and Geisa (the latter was even part of East Germany - the border cut those two neighbour towns apart), (Johannes) Großenlüder and (Karl Philipp Albert) Bad Salzschlirf, Seligenstadt, (Ignaz) Messenhausen and (Andrew) Nieder-Roden (both now municipality of Rödermark).  He was married to Anna Katharina Vollmar. The lineage of Raucks has been traced back to the area surrounding DarmstadtMannheim, and Fulda.

Cousins Michael, Horst and I had the opportunity to visit our family home of Bruck an der Mur and see the house our common ancestory Christoph Rauck owned from 1591 to 1644.

I had the opportunity to visit the salines in  Bad Orb with Wolfgang Klein, our cousin Judith's husband. Our 7th great grandfather, Johannes Rauck, was responsible for building up the salines in Bad Orb and Budingen by his father in law (our 8th grandfather) Johann Philip Beck, the administrator of the Salines under the counts of Ysenburg.

Raucks in America

Sellersburg, Indiana

Andreas, with the help of Martin Koerner and Joseph Ehringer, helped build the first St. Joseph Hill Parish. The Raucks, Koerners,  Ehringers, and Popp families all grace this family's line.

The third Rauck reunion was held on October 3rd in Ober Roden, Germany - the home of our immigrant ancestor, Andreas Rauck and his wife Elizabeth Wade.

We met at the Susse Ecke Cafe in the town center. I'm very thankful to the Homm family for planning the reunion. We had 38 attendees of Raucks and Wades. Before the reunion, the Homm family graciously gave a tour of Messenhausen, Nieder Roden, and Ober Roden, the towns where Andreas was born, raised, and lived before leaving his brothers and sisters and bringing his family to America.

Michael presented a wonderful overview of our Rauck history and explained our connections.

We hope this is only the beginning to bridging the relationships between the US and German Rauck cousins!

The Rauck family held its second Rauck reunion ever in the USA on Saturday, August 16th, 2008 in Sellersburg, Indiana
Approximately 76 Raucks from all over the world attended the event. The family attended a Catholic mass at 5:30 at St. Joe’s Hill Church,
Built with the help of our Rauck ancestors and still attended by many Raucks in the area. We had representatives from the Hammelburg Raucks, Andreas/Andrew, Andreas/Franz, and Andreas/Martin lines.
We would like to thank the cousins in Sellersburg for the extroadinary welcome they provided to the rest of the cousins. We are so appreciative of all the hard work they extended to make this event such a wonderful success!
